Ireland has a very sophisticated whiskey tasting trail throughout the country. My focus this weekend was on the West of Ireland and the loveliest little city in Ireland – Galway.

Head to Shop street (yes you guessed it – lots of shops!) but a few great traditional pubs too, with some outdoor seating for the brave and fantastic welcoming interiors. A wall of Whiskeys meet you , the choice is staggering. Only the truly knowledgeable can go it alone without the guide of a detailed menu and description of what is on offer.

Focus on two Irish whiskeys

 Hyde

-

10 year old President’s Cask Limited Reserve Single Malt. It’s an unpeated double distilled single malt which has been finished for six months in Oloroso Spanish Oak Sherry Casks. This President’s Cask named after Ireland’s first president Douglas Hyde, release is a limited edition of just 5,000 bottles with each bottle individually numbered – we loved it! It is award winning and we agree.

Red Brest

This single pot still whiskey is new to us. To be honest you need to be a tough Man (or Woman) to enjoy this drink. It certainly challenges the senses and the insides! We learned about the single Pot Whiskey which is traditional to Ireland and intend to learn more over the next tastings.

Verdict -  Great experience in Ireland and Irish whiskey is a real delicacy. A definite must do!
